LA FESTA DELLA SALUTE
It 's definitely the least "touristy " and evokes religious feelings of the people. The holiday is, like that of the Redentore, in memory of another terrible plague of 1630-31 biennium, and the subsequent vow by the Doge to obtain the intercession of the Virgin. To date, thousands of people parade on Nov. 21 before the high altar of the imposing Salute Church to perpetuate the ancient bond that unites the city's gratitude to the Virgin Mary
In 1630, more than half a century after the terrible plague of 1575-77, the disease strikes again in Venice. The Doge made a vow to build a church called the Salute, asking the intercession of the Virgin Mary to end the plague. The design was entrusted to the young architect Baldassarre Longhena. Its design perfectly grandeur of the Serenissima: a church that exalted the Virgin and at the same time the Republic. The basilica was consecrated in 1687.
To date, 21 November, thousands of people cross the bridge on votive boats and go on pilgrimage to the Salute church to pay tribute to Madonna and to light a candle to intercede for their health.
