The Festa della Sensa was a feast of the Republic of Venice held on the occasion of the Feast of the Ascension (in the Venetian dialect of Italian Sensa) and still celebrated as a recreation today. It commemorated two significant dates in the Republic's history; May 9, 1000, when the Doge Pietro II Orseolo rescued the denizens of Dalmatia imperiled by the Slavs. The aforementioned date marked the onset of Venetian extension in the Adriatic.
The second event comemorated took place in 1117 when the Doge Sebastiano Ziani, Pope Alexander thericke IIIrd and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa agreed to the Treaty of Venice which ended in the long standing differences between the Pontificate and the Holy Roman Empire. On the Occasion of this festival was held the ceremony of the Marriage of the Sea. This ceremony is recreated annually withe the Mayor of Venice taking on the traditional role which was historically executed by the Doge.02/06/2014
Festa della Repubblica is the Italian National Day, which is celebrated on the 2nd of June each year. The day commemorates the institutional referendum held by universal suffrage in 1946, in which the Italian people were called to the polls to decide on the form of government, following the Second World War and the fall of Fascism.07/06/2014
The 14th International Architecture Exibition, directed by Rem Koolhaas, will be held from Saturday 7th June to Sunday 23rd November 2014 at the Giardini and Arsenale venues.
What better way to celebrate the Pentecoste, the Ascension of the Lord Holiday, than participating or cheering on the partecipant at the Vogalonga Race.The Vogalonga is a 30km paddling/rowing race through the city of Venice and the lagoon up to Burano. Almost all rowed or paddled boats can participate, and there’s even a separate category for kayaks. There are usually well over one thousands boats in the race, of many types.All participants are issued a diploma of participation. The Vogalonga is not a competitive race and there are no winners. The 9th International festival of Contemporary Dance will run 19 to 29 June 2014, directed by Virgilio Sieni.
After the three-day “Biennale College - Dance” that took place in the campi, palaces and theatres of Venice on 28, 29 and 30 June 2013, the program devised by Virgilio Sieni continues: Living in the World - transmission and practices, will present its new chapters in 2014 and in 2015.
The Redentore Festival is close to the hearts of Venetians, and is celebrated on the third Sunday of July, with a grandiose fireworks show on Saturday night as the main attraction. The venetians take part in the spectacle of fireworks right from their boats which are usually decorated with balloons, festoons and lights. Starting before sunset, the boats make their way to the Saint Mark's Basin and to the Giudecca Canal. The waters sparkle with the reflection of boats anf lights. On the boats, among song, dance and typical food, people wait for the fireworks that begin at 11.30pm and go on for almost an hour. Along the banks thusands of peoplealso wait for the fireworks at long tables set up for the occasion.26/07/2014
The new edition of the Biennale College - Theatre directed by Àlex Rigola will take place from 26th July to 9th August 2014. The project will seek again to adopt the spirit of a science lab: a place of postulation and debate, and a space open permanently to encounter and experimentation.
The term Ferragosto is derived from the Latin expression Feriae Augusti (Augustus' rest), which is a celebration introduced by the emperor Augustus in 18 BC. This was an addition to already extant ancient RomanFestivals which fell in the same month, which celebrated the harvest and the end of a long period of intense agricultural labor. The ancient Ferragosto, in addition to obvious self-celebratory political purposes, had the purpose of linking the main August festivities to provide a longer period of rest, called Augustali, which was felt necessary after the hard labour of the previous weeks.
The Catholic Church celebrates this date as a Holy Day of Obligation to comemorate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary - hwat they believe to be actual physical elevation of her sinless soul and incorruptible body in to Heaven.27/08/2014
The 71st International Venice Film Festival will run 27th August to 6th September 2014, directed by Alberto Barbera.
Even now the Regata Storica is one of the most spectacular, picturesque and moving events of Venetian life, capable of both charming the tourists and exciting the locals. A historical procession commerorates the welcome give to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the king and Queen of Cyprus, in 1489 after she renounced her throne in favour of Venice. It is a procession of 16th century style boats, with the famous Bucintoro, the boat repressinting th Serenissima Republic of Venice, at its head.
Then comes the competition. The spectators partecipate cheering the partecipants throughout the whole race.
The 58th International Festival of Contemporary Music will run 3 to 12 October 2014, directed by Ivan Fedele.
In recent editions, the Sala delle Colonne at Ca’ Giustinian established itself as a greatly appreciated venue for chamber concerts, due to the extensive renovation carried out on the acoustics of the hall.
The Venice Marathon is not only about running but mostly about solidarity.
